September Week 2 Lesson: 2nd Grade

Focus Goals

  • I can echo short patterns using sol, mi, and la.
  • I can read and sing sol–mi–la patterns.
  • I can create and perform my own sol–mi–la patterns.

Welcome & Warm-Up

Greet the class with a hello song.

I have a full year hello song schedule that you can download here.

Doggie Doggie

  • Teach the song.
  • This video is similar to how I play the game. The student who is the ‘doggie’ has to guess which student is singing. Also, I say the word “took” instead of “stole”.
  • Great for assessing solo singing

Extension/Day 2: Have students dictate the melody of the song.

Rhythm Play Along

Pass out rhythm sticks and play along.

Surprise Symphony

  • Use this video to read the Surprise Symphony rhythm
  • Use scarves to show the ta/tadi rhythms
  • If there’s time, you can also use this to discuss/review dynamics

Sol-Mi-La Digital Slides

Review sol-mi-la with these digital flashcards.

Extension/Day 2: Students practice these melodies on a pitched instrument (ie xylophone). You can remove bars to make it easier.

Sol-Mi-La Bingo

BINGO is always a fun game for assessing and reviewing melodies and rhythms. Here is the Sol-Mi-La Bingo. Grab it below and let the fun begin.

Radetzky March

  • Have students listen first to identify the meter
  • Listen again and conduct the meter of 2
