September Week 2 Lesson: Kindergarten

Focus Goals

  • I can keep a steady beat using instruments.
  • I can tell the difference between loud and quiet sounds.
  • I can move, sing, and play instruments to show loud and quiet.

Welcome & Warm-Up

Greet the class with a hello song.

I have a full year hello song schedule that you can download here.

Bee Bee Bumblebee

  • Review Bee Bee Bumblebee.
  • Practice it in a loud and quiet voice.
  • Have students pat the beat using the steady beat slips below.

Steady Beat Movement

Review this movement activity from last week.

Steady Beat Play Along

  • Practice the steady beat with this play along (with or without instruments)
  • Incorporate loud/quiet by having students play (or pat) different dynamic levels.

High and Low Vocal Exploration

  • Review this activity from last week.

Grizzly Bear

  • Teach the song. Play the game.
  • This video is similar to how I play the game. The grizzly bear gets to choose the next grizzly. You can modify this game depending on the space you have.

Surprise Symphony

  • Students pat steady beat throughout.
  • When the music is quiet, pat softly; when it is loud, pat strongly.
  • See if students get “surprised” when the music gets louder!
  • Have students discuss what they heard in the music.

Radetzky March

  • Students move the Radetzky March
  • Have them march during the loud parts and tiptoe when it’s quiet.

Sesame Street: Celebrity Lullabies With Ricky Gervais

If you have time in class you can put on this video.

  • Talk about what a lullaby is. Is it loud or quiet?
  • Ask them if this was really a lullaby? Why or why not?
